Melon-H2O

Melon-H2O

The only thing that makes summer heat bearable for me is the bold sweetness of a cold watermelon. The last day of June and the start of July's heatwave prompted closing windows and sweating without moving. In the grocery, on the top of Watermelon Mountain, I gave this member of the gourd family two thumps. The sound was resonant and warranted a place in my cart.

With the first cut, release the luscious scent. The flavor did not disappoint. Seven-eighths of the melon made it into the fridge. As I noshed on the eighth wedge kept for myself, I had a thought. Not only do I savor every bite of watermelon, but I enjoy my particular process of cutting it. Each section sliced with a knife I’ve for some time. Dubbed the ‘watermelon knife’. It moves through any size watermelon with ease. Like wine, I first taste a simple slice directly from the center. Tasted in its purest state confirms that the thump held true to its sound. Incredible.

When I've cut and placed each piece in an appropriate container. I clean my workspace. No sticky residue to happen upon later. No rogue seeds for the cats to mistake for a bug. I sit at the counter with my 'eighth' and embrace the moment and the flavor. This is how creative experiences feel to me. The process is critical. Having the proper tools to complete the task at hand. Starting with inspiration, putting down words, and bringing a story to life. Whether written or drawn. Stories need to be told.

With very bite I feel a fuller. 🍉📝
